Research Summary

My research area is focused on brown adipose tissue (BAT) expansion and thermogenic activity in the context of obesity. Based on recent finding of active BAT in humans, promoting it expansion and activation is considered as a potential therapeutical target of obesity and associated complications. The expansion of BAT is driven its sustained activation by the sympathetic nervous system and the recruitment of progenitors, adequate vascularization and a permissive Extracellular Matrix (ECM). Influence of obesity and associated chronic inflammation on adipose tissue functions is well described in the context of white adipose tissue but remained poorly documented in BAT, particularly regarding it expansion capacity and thermogenic activity. Then, my general objective is to identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the dynamic of BAT expansion during obesity, particularly by focusing on cellular and tissular remodelling. Understanding mechanisms involved in BAT remodelling during obesity could highlight new molecular actors, constituting potential targets in BAT activation and expansion in order to limit obesity-induced lipotoxicity and associated morbidities.
