Technology and biomedicine: a Cambridge showcase

A half-day collaborative online symposium and networking event

Date: 27 September 2021 (morning)
Venue: Online via Zoom

Co-chairs: Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly, Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science and

Professor Roisin Owens, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

A collaborative event between the University’s Metabolic Network and Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, to showcase how innovative new approaches and technologies from mathematical, computing, engineering, physical and chemical sciences are helping to deliver impact and improve patient care.

The session includes a series of short talks from leading investigators followed by a panel discussion and then a number of flash-talks and posters by Cambridge graduate students, post-doctoral and early career researchers, selected from submitted abstracts.

The event will be on Zoom and we are looking forward to exciting inter-disciplinary networking and discussion.

  • A 3D bioelectronic model of the human intestine – Professor Roisin Owens, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
  • Computer vision: real-time estimation of 3D body shape and glucose monitor transcription – Professor Roberto Cipolla, Department of Information Engineering.
  • Diabetes tech: the case of the artificial pancreasProfessor Roman Hovorka, Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science and Department of Paediatrics.
  • Challenges of deep learning in biomedicine – Professor Pietro Lio, Department of Computer Science and Technology.
  • Lipidomics – technological developments in data collection and analysis– Dr Albert Koulman, NIHR BRC Metabolomics and Lipidomics Facility, Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science.
  • Wearable devices for monitoring physical activity and health – Dr Soren Brage, Physical Activity Epidemiology group, MRC Epidemiology Unit.
  • Enhancing clinical outcomes in human adrenal and pituitary tumours through the use of molecular imaging – Professor Mark Gurnell, Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science and Department of Medicine.

Submission of abstracts – deadline 13 September 2021

We invite the submission of abstracts for flash talks (five minutes and maximum of three slides) on any aspect of technology integrating metabolic activity. The call is open to researchers at any level and we particularly welcome submissions from ECRs, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students.
